Description

The stairs of 1989D-1DER-002WS bend moderately under columns 5 through 8, and column 3's fluting extends moderately into the stylobate, the lines heading straight down at 180°. TrailDies also points out a general warping of the stairs, which it says is typical of cents from 1989 through 1992. The number gives the 1989 Denver date, the one-cent digit, DER for design extension reverse, file 002 and WS for wavy steps, the bent-stair effect trails leave. Middle-die-state markers are a small chip on Lincoln's buttonhole and a small gouge just right of the I in UNITED. Trails are usually linked to polishing of the die with a rotary tool, though some link them to the die moving against the hub.
