1989-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-026

Description

A recurring motif of die gouges concentrated in the letter E unifies the marker profile of WRPM-026 (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-026), a D/D South repunched mintmark from the 1989-D Lincoln Memorial cent series. On the obverse, a die gouge appears in the E of LIBERTY and another sits in the E of WE, with the latter gouge extending into the rim — an unusually prominent marker that should remain visible even on well-circulated specimens. The reverse continues the E-centric pattern with a gouge in the E of STATES, supplemented by gouges in the A of AMERICA and the E of ONE. This concentration of damage around a single letter form across multiple legend elements, on both obverse and reverse, may indicate that the die face sustained a particular type of contact event that preferentially affected recessed die areas of similar geometry. The southward mintmark displacement — the secondary D impression visible below the primary — places WRPM-026 among the numerous D/D South varieties documented for this date. No cross-references to CONECA or Coppercoins are currently known. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
