Description

Extensively documented die markers set WRPM-024 apart as one of the more richly characterized repunched mintmarks in the 1989-D census (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-024). This D/D Tilted variety features an obverse where Lincoln's vest has been heavily abraded in the area under the date — a distinctive surface condition indicating that the Mint's die maintenance process aggressively polished this section of the die face, potentially to remove clash marks or other unwanted impressions. The reverse carries an equally detailed marker inventory: die markers appear on the Memorial roof, additional markers sit between ONE and CENT, north-south die scratches traverse the reverse field, and die gouges mark both the roof and the memorial bays. The density of reverse die markers — spanning the roof, lettering, and architectural elements — creates one of the most comprehensive diagnostic profiles among the later-numbered WRPM varieties for this date. The heavy vest abrading on the obverse is particularly notable, as it represents deliberate Mint intervention in the die's surface that can alter the appearance of both the primary design and any pre-existing die markers. No cross-references are currently known. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
