1989-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-023

Description

Tilted repunching defines the D/D orientation on WRPM-023 (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-023), where angular displacement between successive mintmark impressions created a secondary D image rotated relative to the primary strike. The obverse die markers include two vertical die gouges positioned under the D in the designer's initials VDB, a die gouge on the front of Lincoln's vest located west-southwest of the mintmark, and a die scratch originating from the U in TRUST. On the reverse, diagnostic markers are equally distributed: a die gouge sits under the left side of the Memorial base, die gouges appear inside the upper portion of the O in ONE, and a die gouge falls to the right of the lower first T in STATES. The combination of tilted repunching with well-distributed die markers across both surfaces provides collectors with a multi-point attribution framework — the VDB gouges on the obverse and the Memorial base gouge on the reverse together anchor identification even on moderately worn specimens. No cross-references to CONECA or Coppercoins are currently known. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
