1989-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-020

Description

Specified as D/D Tilted with the secondary image showing to the west of the lower serif, WRPM-020 (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-020) provides an unusually precise directional description that identifies exactly which portion of the mintmark letter exhibits the most visible repunching evidence. The obverse features die scratches running north-northwest under the chin and behind Lincoln's head, neck, and back, a light concentric die scratch under VDB near the rim, and two heavy die gouges at the rim between TR in TRUST. The reverse shows a vertical die gouge inside the upper opening of the R in AMERICA and weakly struck lower ES in STATES. The notation about weak lower letters in STATES indicates uneven striking pressure or die fill affecting that portion of the design — a production characteristic distinct from die deterioration that can help pinpoint the die's condition during the relevant production window. No cross-references to CONECA or Coppercoins are currently known. The extensive obverse die scratches behind Lincoln's portrait provide a strong visual fingerprint for attribution. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
