Description

Carrying a notable attribution detail, WRPM-018 (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-018) is documented as also showing Damaged Mint Mark Punch #2 — one of several specific damaged punches identified and tracked by Wexler across multiple working dies. This means the die displays both genuine repunching and evidence of a physically damaged punch tool, creating two distinct mintmark anomalies on a single die. The obverse shows a short west-southwest/east-northeast die scratch on the lower right side of the L in LIBERTY above the vertical bar, while no reverse die markers were noted. The minimal supplementary die marker profile — just one scratch on the obverse and none on the reverse — makes this variety more challenging to attribute than RPMs with extensive marker inventories, placing greater emphasis on the mintmark characteristics themselves for identification. No cross-references to CONECA or Coppercoins are currently known. The co-occurrence of repunching and damaged punch evidence on a single die provides an unusual opportunity to study how two different mintmark anomalies interact on the same coin. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
