1989-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008

Description

Tracked across two die stages with evolving marker profiles, WRPM-008 (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-008) is cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #4 and Coppercoins 1989D-1MM-004. Stage A features a die gouge far right of the second T in TRUST on the obverse and a small die gouge left of the upper E in E PLURIBUS on the reverse. By Stage B, the obverse has developed additional markers — a die gouge south of D in GOD, a gouge centered far above Y, and small linear die gouges under the bottom of 9 in the date — while the reverse shows the original E PLURIBUS gouge fading and new markers emerging: a die gouge south of the right side of the second A in AMERICA and heavy die flow lines above that same letter. The progression from Stage A to Stage B demonstrates the dynamic nature of die deterioration, where original markers weaken under sustained use while new damage points develop elsewhere on the die face. The relationship between WRPM-008 and the original WRPM-006 — which was reclassified as a die state of this variety — underscores the importance of multi-stage documentation. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
