1989-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003

Description

Holding the distinction of CONECA RPM #1, WRPM-003 (Wexler variety ID 1989-D 1¢ WRPM-003) was the first repunched mintmark formally cataloged for the 1989-D Lincoln Memorial cent by the Combined Organizations of Numismatic Error Collectors of America — the variety whose discovery launched systematic examination of 1989-D cents for additional repunching evidence. This D/D Southeast variety shows the secondary mintmark impression offset to the lower right of the primary punch. The obverse displays a small die dot and southwest flow lines below LIB in LIBERTY, while the reverse carries a die gouge right of E in CENT. Also cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1989D-1MM-001, the dual first-position catalog numbers from both CONECA and Coppercoins confirm this was among the earliest 1989-D RPMs identified across multiple attribution services. The southeast displacement represents a diagonal offset, combining both southward and eastward components in the engraver's corrective punch placement — a direction that requires misalignment along two axes simultaneously. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
