Description

Exhibiting a D/D South orientation, the 1989-D RPM-009 shows the secondary mintmark impression displaced directly below the primary punch — a southward offset that ranks among the more commonly observed RPM directions on Lincoln cents. Assigned VarietyVista reference codes UVC-1037 and DMR-010, this variety is tracked across three die stages: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B with both obverse and reverse at mid-die state (confirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The confirmed mid-die state provides the strongest attribution evidence, as the die has developed enough character to show clear supplementary markers while retaining sufficient sharpness for the repunching to remain readily visible. A southward displacement occurs when the engraver's corrective punch lands below the initial impression, creating a secondary D image visible beneath the primary mintmark under magnification. As the ninth VarietyVista RPM documented for the 1989-D date, RPM-009 demonstrates the productive variety hunting ground that late-era Denver Mint cents represent for specialists focused on hand-punched mintmark varieties. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
