1988-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-018
Error
Description
Wexler's WRPM-018 for the 1988-D Lincoln Memorial cent carries a notable observation: all coins examined for this variety have originated from special mint sets, mirroring the provenance pattern seen in WRPM-012. The primary mintmark on this variety sits further east than the mintmark position on WRPM-005, providing a diagnostic distinction between the two listings. Additionally, this variety displays evidence of damaged mint mark punch #3, one of several punch tools used at the Denver Mint that developed distinctive wear patterns cataloged by variety specialists. The special mint set connection shared by WRPM-012 and WRPM-018 raises the possibility that certain die pairings were preferentially used for mint set production, or that the superior preservation of mint set coins simply makes subtle varieties more detectable on those specimens than on circulation strikes. No cross-references to CONECA or Coppercoins are currently known. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
