1988 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-016

Description

1988-D WRPM-016 is a repunched mint mark on the 1988-D Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as D/D Tilted: the secondary D sits at an angle to the primary one. At obverse Stage A, a short, thick scratch heads south off the rim, between TRUST's S and second T. A scratch lies over the I and B in LIBERTY, and gouges show under the B of LIBERTY and inside its lower opening. At obverse Stage B, every Stage A marker can still be seen. On the reverse at Stage A, a gouge sits left of the T in CENT and another above the right Memorial base. At reverse Stage B, both remain. A short gouge, oriented north-by-east to south-by-west, lies between the left leg of CENT's N and the rim; ONE's N has a gouge to the right of its lower part; and a gouge runs south from under the middle crossbar of AMERICA's E. Jay Oen submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler's comments say the die resembles WRPM-003 but appears to differ in the separation seen on the mint mark's upper serif and its vertical bar, and that he would like to examine a WRPM-003 example to decide whether the two are the same die or definitely different.
