1988-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-016
ErrorDescription
A D/D Tilted repunched mintmark designated WRPM-016 by the Wexler team, this 1988-D Lincoln Memorial cent variety is documented across two die states and presents an unresolved cataloging question. The variety shows similarities to WRPM-003, and whether the two represent the same die or distinct dies remains under investigation — a comparison that requires side-by-side examination of confirmed specimens from both listings. Stage A obverse markers include a die scratch from the rim between the S and T in TRUST, a scratch above the IB in LIBERTY, and gouges under and inside the letter B. The reverse displays a gouge left of the T in CENT, a gouge above the right memorial base, a gouge near the N in CENT, a gouge right of the N in ONE, and a gouge from the E in AMERICA. Stage B adds further die deterioration to this already rich marker profile. The open question surrounding WRPM-003 and WRPM-016 highlights the challenges of RPM cataloging when two varieties share similar repunching characteristics but may differ in their supplementary die markers. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm. D/D Tilted Die Markers: Obverse: Stage A: A short, thick die scratch runs south from the rim between the S and second T of TRUST. Die gouges show under and inside lower opening of the B of LIBERTY. Reverse: Stage A: Die gouge left of T in CENT. Die gouge above right memorial base. Stage B: Die gouge left of T in CENT and die gouge above right memorial base still visible. Short N by E/S by W die gouge between the rim and the left leg of the N of CENT. Die gouge right of lower N in ONE. A die gouge runs south from beneath the middle crossbar of the E in AMERICA.

- Discovered by Jay Oen Cross References: None known Comments: This die is similar to WRPM-003 but has seemingly different separation on the upper serif and separation on the vertical bar of the mint mark. I would like to see an example of the WRPM-003 die to determine if they could be the same die or are definitively different.
