1988-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-013

Description

Wexler's WRPM-013 for the 1988-D Lincoln Memorial cent is cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #8 in the Combined Organizations of Numismatic Error Collectors of America catalog. The CONECA designation as the eighth cataloged RPM for this date positions it in the middle tier of discovery chronology — neither among the earliest finds that prompted the initial RPM census nor a later addition from extended searching. Repunched mintmarks on Denver-minted Lincoln cents from 1988 reflect the final chapter of a manual die preparation practice that spanned nearly two centuries of U.S. coinage. Each Denver working die received its D mintmark through a separate hand-punching operation after the die's main design had been impressed by the hub, and any misalignment between the initial and corrective punches left the overlapping impressions that collectors now catalog as RPM varieties. The 1988-D date, together with 1989-D, represents the last vintage in which this process could generate new RPMs before the Mint standardized mintmark placement through the hubbing process itself. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
