1988 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-009

Description

Bearing the distinction of CONECA RPM #1, WRPM-009 was the first repunched mintmark formally cataloged for the 1988-D Lincoln Memorial cent by the Combined Organizations of Numismatic Error Collectors of America — a designation that marks it as the variety that launched the date's RPM census. First-cataloged varieties often hold special interest among collectors who focus on the history of variety attribution itself, and the RPM #1 designation signals that this was the variety whose discovery prompted systematic examination of 1988-D cents for additional repunching. Also cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1988D-1MM-001, this variety anchors the beginning of what would grow into one of the most populous RPM dates in the late Lincoln Memorial cent series. The 1988-D date produced a substantial number of RPM varieties in part because it fell in the penultimate year of manual mintmark application — the U.S. Mint adopted hub-applied mintmarks in 1990, ending the era in which repunched mintmarks could occur. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
