1988 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004

Description

1988-D WRPM-004 is a repunched mint mark on the 1988-D Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as D/D Tilted: the secondary D sits at an angle to the primary one. Wexler records five obverse stages. Stage A: two north-south scratches lie inside the upper part of GOD's G. Stage B: the gouges inside the G are faint; many gouges surround every letter of TRUST, the strongest under the R and on both sides of the first T; gouges appear inside and around the ear; and the die has deteriorated above IN GOD WE TRUST. Stage C: the gouges inside the G are gone, those around the TR of TRUST can still be seen, and the ear gouges remain; new gouges appear under the I and the left side of the B in LIBERTY. Stage D: the TR gouges are very faint, the ear gouges remain, and the gouge under LIBERTY's B can still faintly be seen; a gouge appears under the left side of the O in GOD, and the deterioration is more noticeable. Stage E: the TR gouges can barely be seen, the ear gouges remain, the gouge under the B is still faint, and there is marked deterioration around the obverse rim. On the reverse, Stage A has gouges right of the R in AMERICA. At Stage B those gouges remain, and a roughly north-south scratch appears in the lower part of bay 9. Stage C still shows both. At Stage D the gouges by the R are faint, the bay 9 scratch remains, and gouges appear right of the first T and the A in STATES. Stage E is a new reverse, with gouges running SSE from the U and S in PLURIBUS. Brian Allen submitted Stage A, John Shields submitted Stage B, Stage C and Stage D, and Brian Ribar submitted Stage E. Its Coppercoins number is 1988D-1MM-037. Wexler's comments note that the die first listed as WRPM-017 turned out to be a later stage of WRPM-004 and has been folded into this listing.
