1988-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Closing the 1988-D repunched mintmark census at seven varieties, RPM-007 is cataloged by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1117 and DMR-008 and shows a D/D West offset — returning to the westward direction that dominates this date's RPM inventory. Four of the seven 1988-D RPMs display westward offsets, one shows a northward offset, and one exhibits counterclockwise rotation, a distribution that reflects the statistical tendency toward lateral displacement in the manual mintmark punching process. Seven repunched mintmarks from a single date and mint mark is a substantial count that places 1988-D among the better-represented dates in the Lincoln Memorial cent RPM census. The U.S. Mint transitioned to hub-applied mint marks beginning in 1990, making 1988 and 1989 among the last dates where manually punched mintmarks could produce RPM varieties — a fact that gives these late-era RPMs added historical significance as documentation of a centuries-old die preparation technique nearing its end.
