Description

Carrying VarietyVista die markers UVC-1026 and DMR-004, RPM-003 on the 1988-D Lincoln Memorial cent is another D/D West repunched mintmark, sharing the same directional offset as RPM-002 but originating from a different working die. Multiple RPM varieties with the same directional offset from a single date is not unusual — the manual punching process that created these varieties involved the same basic hand motion for each die, and systematic tendencies in the punch operator's technique could produce similar offsets across multiple dies during a production run. What distinguishes RPM-003 from RPM-002 is not the direction of the repunching but the specific die markers, the magnitude of the offset, and the characteristics of the secondary punch traces. This variety is documented at three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed), Stage B at MDS (confirmed), and Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The confirmed MDS observation represents the primary reference point for attribution, providing the die state at which the variety's diagnostic features have been most thoroughly documented and photographed. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
