The directional notation D/D West follows standard numismatic convention where the first letter represents the final (visible) punch and the second represents the underlying (earlier) punch, with the compass direction indicating where the earlier punch appears relative to the final position. Western offsets on D mint marks are among the more commonly encountered RPM directions, likely reflecting the natural hand mechanics of the Mint employee positioning the punch.
