1987-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-770 and DMR-003, this 1987-D Roosevelt Dime RPM-002 exhibits a D/D Rotated CCW (counterclockwise) repunch as noted in the comments — a rotational RPM where the mintmark punch was held at a different angular orientation during the corrective second impression, producing a counterclockwise rotational offset between the two D images rather than a simple directional displacement. In a rotational RPM, the degree of visible separation between the primary and secondary impressions varies around the letter's circumference, with some portions showing clear doubling and others converging, creating a distinctive fanned appearance. Three die stages document the working die's service life: Stage A where both the obverse and reverse are in early die state (EDS); Stage B in mid-die-state (MDS), unconfirmed; and Stage C in late die state (LDS), also unconfirmed. John R. Sinnock designed the Roosevelt Dime, and this 1987-D was struck at the Denver Mint in clad composition (outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel bonded to a pure copper core) weighing 2.27 grams with a diameter of 17.9 mm. Rotational RPMs are diagnostically distinct from directional RPMs (north, south, east, west) because the angular offset means no single compass direction fully describes the displacement — the secondary impression appears shifted in different directions at different points around the mintmark letter, requiring examination of multiple areas of the D to fully characterize the repunching. The 1987 date falls in the final years before the U.S. Mint transitioned to including mintmarks directly in the master die, making this one of the last Roosevelt Dime dates to produce hand-punched mintmark varieties of this type.
