1987-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
The primary doubled die obverse for the 1987-D Lincoln Memorial cent, DDO-001 displays medium spread on LIBERTY — doubling visible under moderate magnification as separation or notching along the letter edges. Cataloged under die marker identifiers UVC-2403 and DMR-014, this variety represents a hub doubling event at the Denver Mint where a working die received a slightly rotated or offset secondary impression during the hubbing process, imprinting a ghost image that displaced design elements from their intended positions. The medium-spread classification places DDO-001 in the middle range of doubling intensity: strong enough to be diagnostic under a 10x loupe but not the dramatic full-separation doubling seen on the most celebrated doubled dies. LIBERTY, positioned along the left rim of the obverse, is one of the most frequently affected elements on Lincoln cent doubled dies because its distance from the hub's center of rotation amplifies any angular offset during the second hubbing impression. Denver struck 4,007,632,740 Lincoln cents in 1987, the last full production year before the Mint's transition to single-squeeze hubbing technology began rendering traditional hub-doubled varieties increasingly rare. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
