1985-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-026

Description

Carrying a Coppercoins cross-reference of 1985D-1MM-014, WRPM-026 on the 1985-D Lincoln Memorial cent is notable for die scratches along the rim above LIBERTY and a separate scratch along the rim under VDB on the obverse — features near the coin's periphery that can survive even on moderately circulated specimens. Two groups of mostly parallel die scratches appear under the lower bust area, while a pair of die gouges flank the lower 1 in the date to the southwest and southeast. A die gouge near Lincoln's hair under the O in GOD rounds out the obverse markers. The reverse carries gouges along the lower right edge of the first S in STATES, a series of gouges around the N and T in CENT, and a pair of gouges to the left of and inside the O in ONE. The rim-level scratches on the obverse are particularly valuable for authentication on circulated coins, where interior field markers may have worn smooth but rim features often remain legible. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets weighing 2.5 grams and measuring 19mm from the 1985 mintage of over 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985-D 1¢ WRPM-026).
