Description

Sharing a tilted D/D displacement with WRPM-019, this variety on the 1985-D Lincoln Memorial cent is differentiated by its mint mark position — slightly further southeast — and a rich obverse die marker profile. Die scratches oriented northwest-to-southeast below the 8, a gouge behind the bust truncation, a small die dot under the first T in TRUST, and a gouge on the jacket fold southwest of the buttonhole all provide independent attribution points. A concentric ring inside the rim from the first T in TRUST clockwise to just above the date is particularly unusual — such ring-shaped features typically result from a circular tool impression during die preparation. The reverse shows weakness on the lower ES of STATES and light die scratches running west-southwest from the left Memorial base. Collectors should note this variety is also markedly similar to WRPM-024 in placement; die markers are essential for distinguishing between them. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from Denver's 1985 output of approximately 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985-D 1¢ WRPM-021).
