1985-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-020

Description

Without CONECA or Coppercoins cross-references, WRPM-020 on the 1985-D Lincoln Memorial cent stands as a Wexler-exclusive attribution. The tilted D/D displacement shows the secondary mint mark rotated against the primary punch. Stage A obverse markers include a die gouge behind the lapel southwest of the buttonhole and three die gouges clustered around the lower U in TRUST, along with a gouge below the right arm of the R in LIBERTY. Stage B retains all Stage A features. The reverse progresses from a light die gouge at the rim right of the Memorial base in Stage A to Stage B, where that rim gouge persists and a new die gouge appears above the left roof tip. The persistence of obverse markers between stages makes this variety reliably attributable even as the die ages — a trait not shared by all RPMs, where early markers sometimes vanish under polishing. Cherry-pickers should note the triple-gouge cluster around the U in TRUST as the most distinctive feature. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm from the 1985 mintage exceeding 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985-D 1¢ WRPM-020).
