1985-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-017

Description

Sharing its D/D Southeast directional classification with WRPM-001, WRPM-017 on the 1985-D Lincoln Memorial cent is nonetheless readily distinguishable but is readily distinguishable through its unique die marker profile. No CONECA or Coppercoins cross-references have been established. The obverse carries a die gouge in front of the bust level with the bottom of the 9, two light north-south die scratches before the mouth and nose tip, a gouge near the hair between TR in TRUST, three parallel gouges under the T in LIBERTY, and a gouge in Lincoln's collar. The reverse shows a light die crack between the upper C and E in CENT, a gouge in lower right Memorial bay 8, and a die crack running east from the rim below the left Memorial base. The three parallel gouges under the T in LIBERTY are particularly distinctive — parallel features suggest a systematic cause such as a tool mark rather than random damage, making them a reliable diagnostic. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from the 1985 mintage of approximately 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985-D 1¢ WRPM-017).
