1985-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-014

Description

Remarkable for its densely scratched reverse, WRPM-014 on the 1985-D Lincoln Memorial cent offers one of the most heavily marked reverse dies among cataloged RPMs for this date. Cross-referenced by Coppercoins as 1985D-1MM-013, the reverse shows die scratches running east-southeast to west-northwest through the motto, heavy scratches through ONE CENT, horizontal scratches above Lincoln's statue, and north-northwest to south-southeast scratches through Memorial bays 8 through 11. This multidirectional scratching indicates the die received maintenance from multiple angles across several polishing sessions. The obverse carries a light die gouge above the right side of the mint mark, die scratches running northwest from behind the bust truncation, and gouges below the I in IN and southeast of the N in IN. The obverse mint mark gouge sits close to the repunching zone, requiring careful examination to distinguish the gouge from secondary punch traces. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from a 1985 mintage of approximately 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985-D 1¢ WRPM-014).
