Description

Distinguished by its mint mark position further east than WRPM-002, WRPM-013 on the 1985-D Lincoln Memorial cent uses this positional difference as a primary attribution diagnostic — a reminder that the exact placement of the Denver mint mark varied slightly from die to die during this era of individual punch application. Cross-referenced by Coppercoins as 1985D-1MM-019, this variety's obverse die markers include a gouge in the jacket fold northeast of the VDB designer's initials, gouges between and around the 8 and 5 in the date, and a tiny gouge below the front tip of Lincoln's bust. The reverse carries numerous die scratches throughout — under AMERICA, through the Memorial bays, and across the Memorial base — creating an extensively marked surface that aids attribution. A die gouge inside the upper left D in UNITED provides a particularly precise reverse diagnostic. The widespread reverse scratching pattern suggests this die underwent significant maintenance or experienced unusual wear conditions during its production life. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm from Denver's 1985 production of over 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985-D 1¢ WRPM-013).
