1985-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-006

Description

Bearing a D/D South displacement and cross-referenced by CONECA as RPM #3 and Coppercoins as 1985D-1MM-003, WRPM-006 on the 1985-D cent boasts one of the richest die marker inventories in the entire 1985-D RPM catalog. Three obverse stages document a die crack and chips in the upper right of the 5 in the date, a die gouge below TY in LIBERTY, a tiny dot on Lincoln's jacket south of the Y, and a gouge at the southwest corner of the E in WE. The reverse evolves dramatically: Stage A shows a light die crack from the left Memorial roof into the D in UNITED with gouges on the G in FG and in the field northeast of ONE. By Stage B, die cracks extend from both left and right Memorial bases to the rim, indicating terminal structural failure approaching. Stage C introduces an entirely new reverse die — a die gouge under the I in UNITED and a light scratch near the O in OF mark this replacement. The reverse die change mid-production is a significant find, documenting the moment the original reverse was retired. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from the 1985 mintage exceeding 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985-D 1¢ WRPM-006). Vertical die scratches in Memorial bays 3 and 6. Light die scratch at the rim, NW of the O in OF.
