1985-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-004
ErrorDescription
Carrying significant catalog provenance, WRPM-004 is a replacement entry in the Wexler catalog — the original WRPM-004 was determined not to be a repunched mint mark, and this die was substituted in its place. The new WRPM-004 was also found identical to the original WRPM-015, which was itself replaced to eliminate duplication. The primary mint mark sits further west than on WRPM-003, a positional diagnostic. Stage A obverse markers include a die gouge under the B area, a vertical gouge in front of Lincoln's hair, gouges near the I and N in IN, and a fine die scratch running northeast from the mint mark. The Stage A reverse shows a die crack from the left cornice tip to the I in UNITED and die gouges in lower Memorial bay 11. Stage B adds strong new gouges inside upper bay 11 and below the last A in AMERICA. A fine die scratch northeast of the mint mark's upper right edge offers a subtle but reliable attribution point. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm from a 1985 mintage exceeding 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985-D 1¢ WRPM-004).
