1985-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003

Description

Cross-referenced by CONECA as RPM #7 and Coppercoins as 1985D-1MM-007, WRPM-003 on the 1985-D cent is notable for reverse design weakness that compounds with the repunched mint mark to create a multi-feature variety. The Stage A obverse displays a tiny die dot between the lower 1 and 9 in the date and a short die flow line extending from the tail of the 9, along with a die dot below the chin and a vertical die gouge right of the upper E in WE. The reverse tells a complementary story: weakness on the lower D in UNITED, portions of STATES, and OF suggests the reverse die received insufficient pressure or polish in those areas. By Stage B, die cracks appear on Memorial columns nine and ten with a raised area above the A and M in AMERICA, while the obverse develops a new die gouge between the 1 and 9. The die flow line from the 9's tail — a subtle directional mark left during die finishing — persists across both stages as a reliable diagnostic. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams from Denver's 1985 mintage of over 5.65 billion cents (Wexler ID: 1985-D 1¢ WRPM-003).
