1985 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - Repunched Mintmark RPM-006

Description

Displaying a D/D West displacement — the secondary mint mark shifted to the west of the primary punch — RPM-006 on the 1985-D Lincoln Memorial cent offers a directional variety that contrasts with the more common southerly and easterly repunching seen on other 1985-D entries. VarietyVista catalogs this as UVC-996 with die marker record DMR-007. The westward displacement means collectors should look for traces of the secondary D extending from the left side of the primary mint mark when the coin is oriented normally. Three die states are documented: Stages A and C remain unconfirmed, while Stage B places both obverse and reverse at mid-die state. The westward direction of repunching on this variety reflects a specific orientation error during the mint mark application process, where the punch was initially placed too far west before being corrected to its final position. Each direction of repunching produces a distinct visual signature, making directional RPMs a popular collecting specialty within the Lincoln cent series.
