Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1983-D 10¢ WRPM-003, this repunched mintmark variety on the 1983-D Roosevelt Dime exhibits a D/D displacement in two distinct directions — horizontal and northeast — indicating the mintmark punch was struck at least twice with measurable positional error before achieving its final placement. Dual-direction displacement is less common than single-direction repunching and suggests the engraver corrected a first misplacement only to introduce a second offset on the subsequent blow. During this period, mintmarks were still hand-punched into individual working dies, a practice that continued for business strike dies until the Mint began incorporating mintmarks directly into master hubs in 1990. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime design has been in continuous production since 1946, and the 1983-D was struck in clad composition (copper-nickel bonded to a pure copper core) at the Denver Mint. No supplementary die markers were recorded on either the obverse or the reverse. Collectors examining this variety should look for traces of the original D position both to the left (horizontal displacement) and below-left (northeast displacement) of the final mintmark under 7x to 10x magnification.
