Description
TrailDies files this 1981 Philadelphia Lincoln cent reverse as 1981P-1DER-001T. Broken down, that is the year and mint (1981P), the denomination code 1 for the cent, DER for what TrailDies calls a design extension on the reverse, file 001, and a closing T for trails. The lines sit on the letters of the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, which TrailDies abbreviates EPU, and the tops of both Ts in STATES show a faint hint of distortion. They point to 010°, a touch east of due north. The coin TrailDies describes comes late in the life of both dies (stage C): slanting scratches cross the IBER of LIBERTY on the obverse, and a diagonal gouge cuts through the CA of AMERICA on the reverse. Michael Pope found the die. Rotary polishing of the die is the usual explanation for trails, though some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
