Description

Second in the Cuds on Coins census for the 1981 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, CU-1C-1981-02 documents a die whose rim fracture was confirmed as distinct from the inaugural entry, CU-1C-1981-01. The process of distinguishing one cud from another on the same date relies on precise geometric analysis — the break's angular position relative to design elements such as date digits, motto letters, or portrait features must differ measurably from all previously cataloged breaks. When two breaks happen to occur at similar positions, secondary characteristics such as arc length, depth of the raised area, and any associated die cracks or clash marks become critical differentiators. CU-1C-1981-02 satisfied these criteria and was assigned the second census number for the 1981 Philadelphia issue. The 1981 cent continued the production practices established in 1980, with Philadelphia striking cents from 95% copper alloy on planchets bearing the P mintmark — still a relatively recent addition to the denomination at that point, having been introduced just one year earlier.
