1981 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse

Description

On 1981P-1DEO-001T the trails rise from the tops of the letters of LIBERTY and run straight up the coin at 000°, due north toward the rim. The number is TrailDies' shorthand: 1981 and P for a Philadelphia strike, a 1 meaning one cent, DEO standing for design extension obverse, 001 as the file number and T for trails. TrailDies records no obverse markers for this worn pairing, which it places at stage C. On the reverse, scratches lie just left of the O in ONE, and a curved scratch sits in bay 11 of the Memorial. Aisha Shahid found the die. Most specialists put trails down to a rotary buff used to polish the die face, while others suspect movement of the die against the hub.
