1980-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003
ErrorDescription
Originally cataloged as WRPM-011 before a comprehensive renumbering of the Wexler files consolidated several delisted entries, the 1980-D 1¢ WRPM-003 displays a D/D Tilted (Rotated) orientation that places it among the more visually distinctive repunched mintmark varieties for this date. The Wexler Team's attribution notes that a hit on the die nearly obscured the doubling, making careful examination under magnification essential for reliable identification. Two obverse die stages have been documented. Stage A exhibits a network of die scratches running from I through lower N in IN, from upper G to under O in GOD, between lower W and E in WE, left of the first T in TRUST, and from the middle of S in TRUST to below the second T. A strong die scratch runs directly north from Lincoln's nose, accompanied by a die gouge right of lower D in GOD and a separate gouge on the jacket fold. Stage B retains these markers in markedly weakened form while introducing a diagonal die scratch running from the upper right edge of I in IN to between the legs of N, and a new scratch running northeast from under the bowtie. The reverse documents equally thorough die state progression: Stage A shows a die gouge right of E in STATES, another under N in UNITED, a pair of tiny gouges between C and A in AMERICA, a small die dot above the left Memorial base tip, and a die crack running north on column 12. Stage B preserves the N in UNITED gouge while the E in STATES gouge becomes barely visible, and new die cracks appear on columns 9, 10, 11, and 12, with a light crack running along the Memorial base extending south-southeast to the rim. The reassignment from WRPM-011 to WRPM-003 reflects the Wexler cataloging team's practice of closing numbering gaps left by delisted varieties to maintain a clean sequential registry. The 1980-D cent was struck from 95% copper planchets at the Denver Mint. Attribution by the Wexler Team; Wexler Variety ID: 1980-D 1¢ WRPM-003.
