1980-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001
ErrorDescription
Documented across three obverse stages and three reverse stages, the 1980-D 1¢ WRPM-001 was attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #1 and Coppercoins 1980D-1MM-001. This unusually thorough level of die state tracking reflects extensive study by multiple collectors over time. A note in the cross-reference data reveals that the original WRPM-008 designation was found to correspond to an earlier die state of this same variety, resulting in its consolidation under the WRPM-001 number. Obverse Stage A displays circular die polishing lines throughout most of the surface, a die gouge above L in LIBERTY, and a die gouge right of R in TRUST. Stage B retains the Stage A markers while adding die gouges right of the first T in TRUST, right of G in GOD, and under the left side of N in IN. Stage C introduces a die gouge under the 8 in the date while the G in GOD gouge fades and other Stage B markers wear away, though a faint die scratch under the 1 in the date persists. Reverse Stage A shows die gouges in bay 6 around the Lincoln Memorial statue's head and circular die polishing lines throughout most of the surface. Reverse Stage B retains Stage A markers in weakened form while adding a die crack at the right memorial base. Reverse Stage C preserves the bay 6 gouges and right base crack while most other markers become much weaker to absent, with a new die gouge appearing under U in UNITED. This three-stage progression on both faces documents the die's full production life from early state through terminal wear. The 1980-D cent was struck from 95% copper planchets.
