The 1980-D cent was struck during the first year that Philadelphia cents received a P mintmark — a transition that fundamentally expanded the potential for mintmark-related varieties across the entire cent denomination. Denver's mintmark application process remained unchanged: a hand punch bearing the D letter was manually impressed into each working die, and any imprecision in placement between successive applications created the doubled or shifted images that define repunched mintmark varieties.
