Description

Identified by the Wexler Team as 1976-D 1¢ WRPM-001, this repunched mintmark variety on the 1976 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent preserves visible evidence of the manual mintmark application process that was standard at the Denver facility through 1989. During this era, each working die received its "D" mintmark from a separate hand punch: an engraver positioned the letter punch against the die face and struck it with a hammer to impress the mark into the steel. If the initial placement was even slightly off-target, a corrective second blow was applied at the intended position, but the ghost impression of the first attempt remained permanently embedded in the die and appeared on every coin subsequently struck from it. The 1976 Bicentennial year saw commemorative reverse designs on quarters, half dollars, and dollars, but Lincoln cents continued with their standard Memorial reverse unchanged — meaning the cent's production process, including hand-punched mintmarks at Denver, proceeded exactly as in prior years.
