Description

The sixth documented cud for the 1976 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial cent, CU-1C-1976D-06 extends the rim break census for this Bicentennial-year date. Although 1976 is most famously associated with special commemorative designs on other denominations — the drummer boy reverse on the quarter, the Independence Hall reverse on the half dollar, and the Liberty Bell/Moon reverse on the dollar — the Lincoln cent received no Bicentennial treatment and continued with Frank Gasparro's standard Memorial reverse throughout the year. Denver's cent production in 1976 consumed numerous die pairs, each enduring the cumulative mechanical stress of high-speed striking operations. When fatigue cracks propagate through the die steel at the rim — the thinnest and most vulnerable section of the die face — a fragment eventually separates entirely, and the resulting cavity produces the raised, amorphous mass of metal that defines the cud error type. Six cuds from a single Denver date indicates that terminal rim failures occurred with regularity during the 1976 production year.
