1973-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Documented as the first repunched mintmark for the 1973-S Proof Roosevelt Dime, this variety shows an S/S North — the mintmark was punched and then re-entered slightly northward, leaving the lower portion of the initial S impression visible beneath the final placement. Cataloged as UVC-575 and DMR-002, all three die stages remain unconfirmed: Stage A in early die state, Stage B in mid die state, and Stage C in late die state. The unconfirmed status across all stages suggests this variety may be known from a limited number of specimens, making confirmed die state documentation a goal for future researchers. Proof Roosevelt Dimes from the San Francisco Mint received hand-punched mintmarks identical in method to those on business strike dies — the Proof manufacturing advantage lay in polished planchets and specially prepared die surfaces, not in more precise mintmark application.
