1972-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-004
Error
Description
Fourth in the obverse doubled die census for the 1972-D Eisenhower dollar, DDO-004 presents medium spread on LIBER of LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, augmented by a distinctive triple spread on the numeral 1 of the date — an unusual characteristic indicating this digit received three discernible hub impressions rather than the typical two. VarietyVista cataloged this die under UVC-110 and DMR-006, tracking three die stages: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where the obverse has progressed to mid die state and the reverse displays a minor Class 1 DDR of stars and lower letters also at MDS, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The Stage B notation reveals a remarkable dual-variety die: the obverse carries DDO-004 while the reverse simultaneously exhibits a minor doubled die reverse affecting stars and lower-inscription letters, making specimens from this die marriage potential candidates for both obverse and reverse doubled die attributions. The comment confirms the reverse employs RDV-001. Denver struck approximately 92.55 million Eisenhower dollars in 1972, a date already famous for the dramatic 1972 Philadelphia DDO-001 that is one of the most widely collected modern doubled dies. The triple spread on the 1 of the date elevates DDO-004's interest above many Eisenhower doubled dies that show only standard doubled (two-impression) characteristics, as the triple hub contact creates a more complex visual signature. Frank Gasparro designed the obverse portrait of President Eisenhower, and the large 38.1mm diameter amplifies hub displacement across the die face. Collectors should examine the numeral 1 in the date under 10-15x magnification for three distinct digit profiles, then verify by checking LIBER for medium spread.
