PC-100c-1972D-01 Pre-Cud
Error
Description
Before a die crack progresses far enough to produce a full cud — where a fragment of the die breaks away entirely, leaving a smooth, featureless area on struck coins — it passes through a pre-cud stage where the crack exists but the metal remains intact. PC-100c-1972D-01 documents the first cataloged pre-cud on the 1972-D Eisenhower dollar, identified by the Cuds on Coins attribution service using their standard naming convention: PC for pre-cud, 100c for the dollar denomination, 1972D for the date and Denver mintmark, and 01 indicating the first documented example. Frank Gasparro designed the Eisenhower dollar obverse featuring Dwight D. Eisenhower's portrait and the reverse depicting the Apollo 11 insignia eagle landing on the Moon — a large-format dollar coin measuring 38.1mm that imposed substantial mechanical demands on working dies during production. Denver struck approximately 92.55 million copper-nickel clad Eisenhower dollars in 1972, a massive production run for this denomination that subjected dies to repeated high-pressure strikes against the hard clad planchet composition. The pre-cud manifests as a raised, irregular line along the rim where the die has cracked but not yet separated, producing a subtle but traceable fracture path that would eventually develop into a full retained cud or complete die break if striking continued. Eisenhower dollars, with their large diameter and relatively high relief, concentrate significant stress along the die rim — the area where pre-cuds and cuds most commonly develop — because the outward flow of metal during striking pushes against the die collar with force proportional to the planchet's surface area. Collectors should examine the rim under 5-10x magnification for a raised irregular line that follows the rim contour, marking the boundary where the die steel has fractured beneath the surface.
