Description

Cataloged in the VarietyVista system as DDO-001 for the 1972 Denver Mint Eisenhower Dollar with cross-references UVC-038 and DMR-003, this first documented doubled die obverse displays light spread on IN GOD WE TRUST with tripling on the 1 of the date. Five die stages have been documented, making this an unusually well-tracked variety: Stage A and Stage B at early and mid-die state respectively are unconfirmed, Stage C shows the obverse in late-to-mid die state with the reverse listed as DDR-001 in late-to-mid die state and light die crack on the eagle's right talons, Stage D shows the obverse in late die state with a die crack south from the eagle's right wing and a die chip outside the upper O of OF, and Stage E shows both obverse and reverse in very late die state. The reverse is identified as RDV-001. The 1972-D Eisenhower Dollar was struck in copper-nickel clad composition at the Denver Mint, featuring Frank Gasparro's design with Eisenhower on the obverse and an eagle landing on the moon on the reverse. Five documented die stages provide collectors with a detailed roadmap of this die pair's entire working life from early to very late state.
