1971 (S) Proof Silver Eisenhower Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013

Description

During the hubbing process for the 1971-S Proof Silver Eisenhower Dollar, misalignment between the hub and working die created the doubling preserved on this WDDO-013 variety. Hubbing errors occur when a working die receives multiple impressions from the hub with slight positional shifts between strikes, leaving traces of extra thickness or separation on design elements. The 1971-S silver Ike holds a special place in American numismatics as the first dollar coin struck since the Peace Dollar series ended in 1935, reviving a denomination absent from production for over three decades. Frank Gasparro's design honored both President Eisenhower and the Apollo 11 moon landing of 1969, with the reverse eagle-on-moon motif adapted from the mission patch designed by astronaut Michael Collins. With at least eighteen doubled die obverses now cataloged for this single issue, the 1971-S silver proof stands among the most variety-rich modern dollar coins. This variety is cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 1971-S $1 Pr WDDO-013. Specialists differentiate each WDDO number through unique combinations of doubling class, spread direction, and affected design elements.
