Description

Holding the primary DDO catalog position for the 1971-S proof Eisenhower Dollar, WDDO-001 displays a strong Class II tripling spread toward the center on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date — three obverse elements spanning the full diameter of Frank Gasparro's obverse design featuring Dwight D. Eisenhower's portrait. The tripling designation indicates three distinct hub impressions rather than the typical two, creating multiple overlapping contours that produce a more complex visual effect than standard doubling. The "Peg Leg R" diagnostic — where the right leg of the R in LIBERTY appears truncated or malformed — provides a quick visual attribution checkpoint even at moderate magnification. Additional obverse markers include a small die gouge to the left of the R in LIBERTY and a die scratch running northwest from the upper left I in AMERICA. Reverse markers include two small die gouges on the top left of the E in AMERICA and a die gouge to the right of the top of star number 13. This variety was formerly listed in the Wexler Doubled Die Files under a different designation before being reassigned. The 1971-S proof Eisenhower Dollar was struck in 40% silver composition at 24.59 grams on 38.1mm planchets, the first year of production for the Eisenhower Dollar series. Examine IGWT and LIBERTY under 5x magnification for the tripled contours.
