TrailDies lists this 1971-S proof Lincoln cent obverse as 1971S(PR)-1DEO-001T: San Francisco, struck as a proof, one cent, obverse design extension, file 001, trails. Instead of long lines, the entry describes a slight distortion along the tops of the letters BERT in LIBERTY, of the kind other trail dies show on similar letters, and estimates the direction at 000°, straight up toward the rim. TrailDies photographed LIBERTY twice under different lighting so that the effect can be seen; both views are of the one die. It is an early die state, with a near-vertical scratch in front of Lincoln's bow tie and a slanting one beside the 1 of the date. Die polishing with a rotary buff is the usual explanation for trails, although some attribute them to the die moving against the hub.
