1971 Eisenhower Dollar - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

1971 WDDO-001 is a doubled die obverse on the 1971 Eisenhower dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. A Class II spread toward the center shows on the letters of IN GOD WE TRUST, and slightly on LIB of LIBERTY. Obverse Stage A has two parallel scratches running SE from the base of GOD's O to the top of TRUST's U, and two parallel scratches running SE from the bottom right of WE's W and from the top right of TRUST's second T. Light rotational scratches cover the field around Eisenhower's head. On Obverse Stage B the Stage A scratches are very weak but can still be seen at the right angle, and a diagonal gouge appears right of the base of GOD's O. The reverse is a doubled die as well: Wexler lists Reverse Stage A as 1971 WDDR-001A and Reverse Stage B as 1971 WDDR-001B. John A. Wexler submitted the variety. Wexler lists no cross-references. Wexler notes that The Authoritative Reference on Eisenhower Dollars lists this variety as DDO-001 but does not list its reverse as a doubled die.
