1971 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001

Description

The 1971 DDO-001 is a doubled die obverse variety on the Philadelphia Mint Eisenhower Dollar, the large-format dollar coin (38.1mm) struck in copper-nickel clad composition for business strikes. Designed by Frank Gasparro, the obverse features President Dwight D. Eisenhower while the reverse depicts the Apollo 11 eagle landing on the moon. The obverse shows a light spread on IN and TRUST from the motto IN GOD WE TRUST, with doubling on the first 1 of the date visible as split upper serifs — where the top of the numeral displays two distinct points rather than one. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-002 with die-marriage reference DMR-002, three die stages have been documented: Stage A shows both obverse and reverse in early die state, while Stages B and C remain unconfirmed.
