Description
Documented by VarietyVista with the notation that specimens can be found in Mint sets, this 1971-D RPM-004 Jefferson Nickel displays D/D South. The Mint set provenance note is significant because uncirculated coins in original packaging exhibit sharper mintmark detail, making RPM displacement easier to examine. Die markers UVC-508 / DMR-005 track three stages: Stage A with both obverse and reverse at EDS; Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). Can be found in Mint sets. Struck at Denver in 1971 in 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams at 21.21 mm diameter. The early 1970s represent a transitional period — manual mintmark punching continued but was approaching its end, as by 1990 mintmarks would be incorporated into master dies, permanently eliminating RPMs from future coinage.
