1971-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Primary RPM variety on the 1971 Denver Jefferson Nickel, catalogued by VarietyVista as RPM-001. By 1971 the Jefferson Nickel was back in standard copper-nickel alloy after the wartime silver interlude, and mintmarks were still hand-punched — the Mint did not transition to hub-included mintmarks until 1990. Die marker codes UVC-449 and DMR-002 are assigned. Stage A and Stage B are both confirmed: Stage A shows obverse and reverse at early-to-middle die state (EMDS), while Stage B shows both sides at late-middle die state (LMDS). Stage C is late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The mintmark is classified D/D Rotated CW, with the secondary D impression rotated clockwise relative to the primary. This variety can be found in 1971 Mint Sets, giving date-set collectors a path to encountering it with minimal handling. The D/D Rotated CW geometry is the defining identification feature and should be confirmed under magnification before consulting die stage markers.
