1970-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-038
ErrorDescription
Small Date counterpart to the Large Date WDDO-038, this entry records the same doubling above the 7 and identical die marker constellation — scratches through the date and from RTY in LIBERTY on the obverse, and a scratch through E and N of ONE on the reverse — on a die prepared from the 1970-S Small Date hub. The Small Date version requires slightly different examination technique because the 7's lower position means the doubling above it falls in a tighter space between the numeral and the surrounding field, potentially appearing more compressed than on the Large Date where the taller 7 places its doubled upper portion in a more open area. The die scratches through the date serve double duty: they help confirm variety attribution while simultaneously passing through the region where the Small Date's distinctive numeral proportions are most visible, allowing the examiner to verify both hub type and variety in a single focal area. Reverse confirmation through the E-N scratch in ONE provides the same die-pairing assurance regardless of hub type. The 1970-S Small Date's inherent collectibility elevates any documented variety, and WDDO-038's well-mapped die marker set makes it accessible to collectors who may be less experienced with subtle doubled die detection — the scratches themselves guide the eye to the correct examination zone.
